Columbus Day

Christopher Columbus discovered America on an expedition sponsored by King Ferdinand of Spain in 1492. He was born in 1451 in Republic of Genoa, Italy and throughout his life he did many expeditions. One of them was an expedition to the Atlantic Ocean and that expedition almost killed him. He left Spain in 1492 with Pinta and Nina alongside of him. He was credited for opening up Americas to the European colonization. After 36 days of traveling, Christopher and his men landed in present day Bahamas and claimed the land for Spain. Christopher was supposed to find a direct water route from Europe to Asia, but instead he accidentally landed in what is now America. He wasn’t the first to discover it since people already lived there we he got there. His journey actually marked the beginning of centuries of trans-Atlantic conquest and colonization. Christopher Columbus died in May 20, 1506.

Reflection:
I am glad that Christopher accidentally landed in America than actually finding the water route. I mean it sucks that he died thinking he found an easier route to get from Europe to Asia, but he still founded still very important. Even though he wasn’t the one who originally discovered America since people were already living there, but he did let other people know about the new land, so more people came. I feel kind of sad that he died without knowing what he had actually found, but I can’t do anything about that. I do wonder why we don’t celebrate Columbus Day here in California the way we celebrate other days like this. I mean he does deserve some credit even if he wasn’t the original founder of America. He still did still important and we should appreciate that, will at least that is what I think.
